Westmead Feelings Program

The Westmead Feelings Program 1 is an evidence-based therapeutic intervention that teaches children with autism spectrum disorder about emotional understanding and social awareness. The program also develops parents’ and teachers’ (pending teacher availability) emotion coaching skills; with the aim of supporting children to understand emotions, solve problems and ultimately manage their feelings in everyday settings. The program includes a total of 23 sessions including 15 child sessions, 6 parent sessions and 2 booster sessions. The sessions run for approximately 60 minutes each. The program is designed to run concurrently across three school terms, with one parent and one child booster session occurring in term 4.

This intervention is aimed at verbal children with an autism spectrum disorder diagnosis between 8 – 12 years of age with a mild intellectual disability, or between 6 – 8 years of age with no intellectual disability. This includes children who may or may not read, can draw simple pictures or write a few key words and can pay attention for at least a few minutes at a time.
